U.S. stocks and ETFs attract global attention because many of the world’s largest companies and funds trade in U.S. markets. But before a Cameroonian investor buys U.S. assets, they should understand the practical issues.

First, check the platform. Is it licensed or working with properly regulated partners? Can you verify who holds client assets? Does the platform clearly explain whether it is a brokerage, adviser, education platform, or technology provider?

Second, understand KYC. Regulated financial platforms usually require identity verification. Investors may need a valid ID, proof of address, tax forms, and other documents before any live account can be opened.

Third, understand currency conversion. If you fund in FCFA and invest in USD, you may face exchange-rate movement, conversion spreads, bank fees, mobile-money fees, and timing differences.

Fourth, understand taxes. Non-U.S. investors may face U.S. withholding tax on certain U.S.-source income such as dividends, unless a treaty or exemption applies. Tax treatment can depend on residence, account structure, product type, and documentation.

Fifth, understand product risk. A U.S. stock can fall. An ETF can fall. A technology stock, dividend stock, bond ETF, or leveraged ETF can all behave differently.

Sixth, beware of fake access. Scammers often use the names of real U.S. companies, fake dashboards, WhatsApp groups, and “guaranteed profit” language to attract victims.

Before investing, ask:

  • Who regulates this platform or its partners?
  • Where is my money held?
  • What fees will I pay?
  • What FX rate will be used?
  • What tax documents are required?
  • Can I withdraw?
  • What happens if the market falls?
  • Am I receiving education or personal investment advice?

Key takeaway: Buying U.S. assets can offer opportunity, but investors must understand regulation, custody, taxes, FX, fees, and risk before using real money.
